Anyway, since I've been on a recent fennel craze, it's not that surprising that I purchased a package of Burnt Sugar and Fennel Shortbread cookies by Lark Fine Foods from Mouth. I must say, Mouth does have a way of getting people lured into buying more than they'd originally planned to. Case in point: once I had the fennel cookies in my bag, I could not help but wonder what other interesting cookies they had in stock. So it really didn't take more than a minute for the Lavender Honey Shortbread Cookies by Whimsy & Spice to join the rank of growing items in my shopping bag. And if they weren't out of stock, the Earl Grey Chocolate Chip shortbread cookies by Two Moon Shortbread would have been a member of the party as well. Oh well, maybe next time.
The burnt sugar and fennel cookies were thick and crumbly with just the perfect amount of sugared chewiness and spicy bite. They're definitely cookies meant to be enjoyed by adults, as I can't imagine kids being able to appreciate the depth and complexity packed into a single cookie (but then again, those kids on Masterchef Junior knew how to make beef wellingtons before I did so who am I to judge).
The honey lavender cookies, on the other hand, were more subtle, light, and buttery--suitable for an afternoon tea snack. Because they are thinner and less potent, I always find myself reaching for more than one when they're next to me.
Although these cookies may not be the cheapest, they make up for it in flavor and uniqueness. Nowhere in a typical grocery store will you find a fennel or lavender flavored cookie sitting next to a box of Oreos of Chips Ahoy. They're definitely worth the splurge!
